Institute of Pediatric Sleep and Parenting Launches 95-Hour Lactation Certification

Now, the Institute is bringing the same comprehensive education, professional credibility, and exacting standards to lactation education with the launch of its new 95-hour Lactation Certification.

After examining what was currently available, IPSP identified a clear need for something more substantial. Too many lactation courses offered only a brief introduction to breastfeeding or brought together disconnected presentations and resources without a thoughtfully designed learning progression.

IPSP set out to create something different: a cohesive, evidence-based certification in which every topic intentionally builds upon the last, giving students knowledge they can understand, apply, and confidently carry into their work with families.

“People know what to expect from an IPSP course,” said Violet Giannone, RN, founder and director of IPSP. “They expect depth, credibility, and an education that prepares them to use what they have learned in the real world. This could never be a surface-level breastfeeding course with the IPSP name on it.”

Developed over two years, the new program was created for sleep consultants, doulas, nurses, newborn care specialists, birth and postpartum professionals, and others who want to confidently support families with evidence-based lactation education.

For professionals already working with infants and new parents, feeding questions are part of nearly every conversation. Feeding affects sleep, development, parental confidence, and nearly every aspect of the newborn experience. Yet professionals without substantial lactation education are often forced to end the conversation just as a family needs more support.

“Our students and graduates have been asking us for years to create a lactation program because they encounter these questions every day,” Giannone said. “They do not want to keep saying, ‘You’ll have to ask someone else.’ They want the knowledge to provide more complete support while remaining confident in their role and scope.”

The IPSP Lactation Certification provides an in-depth education in milk production and supply, latch and positioning, milk transfer, painful feeding, pumping, bottle-feeding, milk storage, returning to work, maternal and infant health, documentation, professional communication, telehealth, feeding plans, research appraisal, perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, and recognizing when referral to a licensed healthcare provider is needed.

Rather than simply presenting information, the program teaches students how to apply that knowledge. Interactive scenarios, case-based learning, quizzes, and live discussions help students work through the types of questions and situations they may encounter when supporting real families.

The certification is taught by Kelly Wysocki-Emery, MSN, RN, IBCLC, an experienced lactation professional with approximately 30 years of experience. In addition to comprehensive recorded instruction, students receive access to weekly live case-study and mentorship sessions.

The online, self-paced format allows students to complete the program around their existing work and family responsibilities while retaining lifetime access to the course.

For professionals who want to add lactation education to their services, the certification opens the door to supporting families earlier, offering feeding-focused services, creating combined feeding and sleep packages, and serving families throughout pregnancy, the newborn period, and the transition back to work.

“This is not simply about adding another certificate,” Giannone said. “It is about becoming the professional who can answer more of the questions families are already asking—and the person they trust to support them through more of their journey.”

The program also provides the 95 hours of lactation-specific education required for those pursuing the International Board Certified Lactation Consultant^® (IBCLC^®) credential. Candidates must independently complete all additional pathway requirements established by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners.

Upon successful completion, graduates receive the IPSP Lactation Certification. Depending on the laws and regulations in their location, graduates may describe the services they provide as lactation education. The certification does not confer the IBCLC credential, authorize the practice of medicine, or replace clinical care from a licensed healthcare professional.
