Innovaccer today announced the appointment of Paul M. Black, former CEO of Allscripts, former Chief Operating Officer of Cerner, experienced healthcare technology investor, and board member/ADVISOR to more than eight artificial intelligence companies, to its Board of Directors. A recognized healthcare leader by Becker’s Hospital Review and Modern Healthcare, Black brings more than four decades of experience at the intersection of healthcare, information technology, data, and actionable intelligence.
Black served as CEO of Allscripts from 2012 to 2022, leading one of the healthcare industry’s largest technology companies through a period of significant transformation. Before Allscripts, he spent more than 13 years at Cerner, serving as Chief Sales Officer, ultimately serving as Chief Operating Officer and where he helped drive the company’s organic growth into a leading healthcare IT company from $100 million in top line to more than $1.5 billion in annual revenue. He began his career at IBM, where he held sales, marketing, and professional-services leadership positions. Across his career, Black has served on public, private, and nonprofit boards spanning the healthcare industry in technology, financing, medical device, software, healthcare services, care delivery and drug discovery. He was on the executive committee then chaired Truman Medical Centers, an academic safety-net health system, for 16 years; serves on the Board of Directors of the Harry S. Truman Library Institute; and was appointed to the CommonSpirit Health Board of Stewardship Trustees in 2025.
As an active investor and board member of more than eight artificial intelligence companies, Black brings a current, practical perspective on the evolution of AI from emerging capability to enterprise-scale healthcare transformation. His experience spans the full healthcare data journey: creating digital records, connecting data across systems, and making that information actionable for clinicians, operators, and importantly – consumers.
This experience aligns directly with Innovaccer’s mission to make healthcare data more connected, usable, and actionable. Innovaccer’s Healthcare Autonomy Platform unifies clinical, claims, financial, and operational data to enable AI-powered workflows that help healthcare organizations move from fragmented information and manual processes to proactive, intelligent operations.
“Healthcare has been on a long journey from paper to digital, and the next chapter is making that digital infrastructure actually intelligent,” said Paul M. Black, incoming Innovaccer Board Member. “The systems we built over the past three decades created and captured the data. Innovaccer is turning that data into action, connecting it across every system a health organization runs on and deploying AI that can execute the work, not just surface the insight. That is the shift the industry has been waiting for, and I am proud to join the board to help build that architecture for the industry.”
“Paul has spent more than forty years at the center of how healthcare technology gets built and deployed at scale, and he has seen every stage of this industry’s evolution from the inside,” said Abhinav Shashank, Co-founder and CEO of Innovaccer. “What he understands better than almost anyone is that the data layer is what determines whether AI delivers or disappoints. We are building the industry infrastructure for Autonomous Healthcare Operations that every health system and payer will run on and having Paul on our board to help shape that chassis is exactly the kind of leadership and perspective that moment requires.”
